Winners of the 2019 Young Writers Workshop Announced

Jiang Boyan, LLC, the strategic partner of Beijing OpenBook, is pleased to present the winners of “China’s Young Writer Workshop” campaign held by the Professional Committee under Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

According to Yang Honying, “Their literary and writing backgrounds are made up of infinite imagination, excellent language control ability and childlike aesthetic taste. This is the future of literature.”

Candidates are students from all primary and secondary schools nationwide, and are selected by rounds of writing competitions. By spending their summer time in Beijing, finalists are able to participate in the closed training with face-to-face guidance from the famous writers. At the end of the workshop, through appraisal and selection by expert committee, students who finished qualified fictions would be able to sign with the committee as “Young Writers”. Thus, their works will be promoted and published by domestic and foreign media and publishing houses.

The workshop has a strong team of mentors, with famous children’s literature writer Yang Hongying as the chief supervisor. Mentors teach candidates writing skills in person in order to inspire the students’ perception, imagination and thinking ability.

Other mentors include:

  • Shen Shixi, also known as “the king of animal novels in China”;
  • Zhang Zhilu, the winner of Hans Christian Andersen prize in China;
  • Xiong Jing, with pen name Xiao Ni Zi, is a famous writer in youth school literature; and
  • Zou Zou, a popular female writer.

This year is the third session of the workshop since the first held in summer 2017. Selected from more than 50,000 candidates across the country, the students have completed a number of creative works, including fairy tales, science fiction, fantasy, campus and other categories.

The phrase “strong youths lead to a strong field of literature” encourages young writers. With writers as teachers, young writers will be able to bring their original thoughts and in-depth thinking into their works, and further make their own chapters in the future history of literature.
